Woltering
Sculpture and jewelry artist
As an artist and designer, I have a preference to work with material with my own hands. My affinity with craftsmanship is what defines my work. I started my educations by learning the traditional craftsmanship of a goldsmith, after this I wanted to learn more about design so I went to study product design and then finally I developed myself in the world of ceramic sculptures at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Today, some years later and with work experience in both fields, it felt like the right time to combine these disciplines this resulted in my ceramic jewelry.
ARTIST STATEMENT
The time and environment we live in has a major influence on what we eat, drink and breathe, it all has a direct connection with our body’s complex systems. The chemical process in our body is responsible for our feelings, our inclinations to do things – our awareness of the qualitative nature of our senses.
For creating sculptures, my most important tools are intuition, analysis and observations, as well as research. Using these tools, in relation to the conditions I’m living in, and by modifying these conditions, analysing my actions while making my sculptures is an on-going process. That is guided by the material finding its own shape by letting go so it settles again. With this method of creating, there is a dialogue between the specific environment, the theme I’m investigating and the characteristic properties of the material.
I’m interested in investigating to what extent can I make autonomous decisions? Is it the chemical process in my body making the decisions and to what extend am I going on ‘native’ instinct? Do I feel different and do I make different choises when I for example imitate a gather and hunter diet?
In my artistic process I investigate and comment on human behavior, evolution and native instinct. Notably as a comment on the society of today.
